Homebuilt Aerodynamics
and Flight Testing
by Sonja Englert
Homebuilt Aerodynamics & Flight Testing is an introduction to flight testing homebuilt aircraft and to the aerodynamics involved in various types of designs ranging in sophistication from ultralights to the Lancair 4.
The testing described will allow you to develop real performance numbers for your particular aircraft for the purposes of basic operations, flight planning, comparisons to other similar aircraft, and as a requirement for certification in some countries. Each test listed includes pilot's procedures, CG requirements, instrumentation requirements, configuration sheets, and flight test data forms. This book is written for the typical homebuilder/pilot. Mathematics is kept to a bare minimum and equipment required tends to be confined to standard cockpit instrumentation, a GPS, and a stopwatch. Thus test results may be deemed suitable for the needs of the pilot but may lack the dsegree of precision sometimes required by the professional flight test engineer.
